Reader confirms nsmb.conf file sharing fix for Error -36

John Blagden confirmed a workaround to resolve -36 file sharing errors with Mac Mavericks clients and Mavericks servers. The fix forces OS X Server to use SMB1 instead of SMB2 by creating a file called nsmb.conf containing the line "smb_neg=smb1_only." This can be a plain text file or created from Terminal. Blagden writes:

My client got error _36 when copying folders and files from workstations running Mavericks 10.9.4 to a Mac Pro server running Mavericks 10.9.4/Server 3.1.2.

Following Jochen Lannig's very clear advice I placed the nsmb.conf in ~/Library/Preferences/ of the server and the three Mavericks workstations (the 10.8.5 workstations did not have the copying problem), restarted them and the problem had gone away.

Question: would I need to do this for just the server if I came across the problem again, or do both server and workstation need to be set to SMB1?

Our guess is that you only need to do this on the OS X Server, since the Mac clients ordinarily negotiate with the server when connecting. Do you know for sure? Does this fix work for you?
