Office for iPad due during Macworld Expo

Reuters reports that Microsoft may release Office for iPad on March 27, the first day of the Macworld Expo show. Reuters quoted an unnamed source saying that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella would make the announcement in San Francisco, the location of Macworld Expo. This would be Nadella's first major press appearance since replacing Steve Ballmer as CEO last month.

The suite is expected to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Reuters said that Microsoft has been loosing up to $2.5 billion a year in potential revenue by not having an iPad version. Some commentators, however, such as Computerworld's Preston Gralla, believe this to be an overly optimistic number.

Several analysts have suggested that Office for iPad would be offered as a service as part of Microsoft's Office 365, similar to Office Mobile for iPhone, which launched in the second half of last year.

Microsoft has not yet released a version of Office for it's own touch-screen devices, but one is expected for Windows 8.1 sometime this year.
