Mavericks 10.9.2 adds fixes for mail and SMB2 file sharing

Apple released OS X 10.9.2, an update to the Mavericks operating system. Apple describes more than two-dozen bug fixes, including those for email and for connecting to SMB2 file servers, two areas that have plagued Mac users since Mavericks was released. But there is no word on whether the update addresses problems with connecting to Exchange Server with Mail or Outlook. mavericks-filesharing.html

Apple's support document on the update states that the 10.9.2 update "improves reliability when connecting to a file server using SMB2." Readers have reported Mavericks problems connecting to Windows file servers and network attached storage device, with few workarounds.

The update also fixes a bug that prevented printing to printers shared by Windows XP, and resolves a problem that caused VPN connections to disconnect.

Among the most eagerly awaited fixes are those for email. Apple says that the 10.9.2 release "includes general improvements to the stability and compatibility of Mail." We don't know if this includes fixes for bugs with Mail and Outlook connecting to Exchange Server, but Apple does say that the update "resolves an issue that prevented Mail from receiving new messages from certain providers." There is no indication as to whether Exchange Server is one of these "certain providers."

Apple does say the update "improves the accuracy of unread counts in Mail." There are some more fixes for Gmail, including better compatibility with Gmail Archive mailboxes improvements to Gmail labels.

The 10.9.2 update is the third update of Mavericks that Apple has said includes fixes to email. The other two were 10.9.1 last December and a special "Mail Update for Mavericks" released last November.

The update also includes security patches, including a fix for the widely reported hole in SSL connection verification.
